Fluorescent light tubes or bulbs together with other popular sources of fluorescent lighting are getting popular with each passing day. These lamps have been designed to be energy efficient as well as environment-friendly. Fluorescent lighting is used across the world in many places.
Classification of fluorescent light tubes
Fluorescent tubes are classified based on various ways which include their power rating, the shape of the tube, length and diameter of the tube, the color of light emitted among other ways. Dimensionally, these bulbs come in varied lengths and diameters and these are used to calculate the power consumed and light generated by a fluorescent light tube.
Which one is better, T8 or T12?
In terms of length, 36 and 48 inch is common. However, the diameter is denoted in terms of T which can easily be converted into inches. One T represents an eighth on an inch. T8 and T12 are common diameters in place and this means t8 has a diameter of eight-eighths of an inch meaning has one-inch diameter whereas t12 has 12/8 inches in diameter meaning one and a half inch.
Research has shown that smaller tubes are more efficient than wider tubes and due to this, the t8 tubes consume lesser power by about a third compared to t12 to produce an equal amount of light. However, this applies only when they have equal length.
The advantage here is that the tubes are interchangeable in their ballast. One can have t12 tube used in a ballast made for t8 tube and vice versa but this is associated with a small decrease in their lifespans.
Places for using fluorescent light
Fluorescent lighting is used across the world, especially in commercial facilities, in schools as ceiling lamps, inside vehicles, for security lighting outdoors as well as in living rooms. Apart from general lighting purposes, these lamps are also designed for decorative purposes. These decorative lamps produce different colors such as green, red, blue and other colors.
